PETERSBURG – The Petersburg Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will celebrate 100 years of the sorority’s existence with 100 commemorative bricks to be placed in front of the new Petersburg Public Library. Soro Yvette Robinson, who also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Petersburg Library Foundation, is coordinating the efforts to have the Delta’s purchase the bricks. To date, 40 bricks have been purchased and will honor family members or will be specific to honoring the Petersburg Alumni Chapter.

Members gathered on the construction site of the new Petersburg Public Library to remind other Delta’s to get their order in before June 1. The Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was established January 13, 1913, on the campus of Howard University. In 1937 the Delta’s established and circulated the “traveling library” in the South to provide access to blacks. Mrs. Robinson said “this is our (Petersburg Alumni Chapter) way to celebrate the new Petersburg Public Library as we celebrate the Delta Sigma Theta’s Centennial.”

The bricks can be purchased online by visiting or by calling the Petersburg Library Foundation at 804-733-2387, ext. 30.
